Is it ok to feed spinach to a dog?

The short answer is yes. The long answer is that there are a few issues that should be considered when it comes to feeding your dog spinach, but in the end the answer is yes and spinach is ok for your dog to eat.

Before we get into the detls I’d like to say that this is a question that I’ve been asked before and I’m happy to say that the answer to this question has not changed in the past two years that I’ve written this article.

I’ve done a lot of research on this topic, read lots of opinions, and talked to owners of dogs who have fed their dog spinach (and those who have given it to their dog). I’ve also spoken with dog doctors and consulted with a nutritionist and vet who specialize in dogs and I feel like I have a pretty good answer.

The question of whether spinach is ok for dogs is actually a bit more complicated that many people realize because of the following issues.

You shouldn’t feed a dog spinach at any time of the year.

You shouldn’t feed a dog spinach unless it has been properly cooked.

You shouldn’t feed your dog spinach in amounts greater than that which can fit on your fingertip.

You shouldn’t feed your dog spinach if your dog has an upset stomach, heart condition, liver or kidney disease, or any other health issue.

You should definitely not feed your dog spinach if your dog is pregnant, nursing, or if you’re planning on using this for growth (growth supplements or diets) as spinach can contn harmful levels of Vitamin K, which can actually kill puppies and young dogs.

You shouldn’t feed your dog spinach if your dog has an intolerance to any ingredients (e.g., chicken is ok for dogs but if your dog has an intolerance to chicken, you should not feed him chicken)

You shouldn’t feed your dog spinach unless it has been properly cooked.

There is one more issue that you should be aware of if you’re planning on feeding spinach to your dog.

It’s ok to feed spinach to your dog if you’re an adult dog, but spinach is not ok for puppies or young dogs. The reason why is that when dogs are young, they are more prone to bloat and spinach contns a plant oil that will promote bloat (this is also true of some other vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, etc.).

You shouldn’t feed spinach to your dog if he has an upset stomach, heart condition, liver or kidney disease, or any other health issue.
